On April 21, 2021, the European Commission published a proposal for a new Regulation on Artificial Intelligence and thereby initiated the legislative procedure of the European Union. While the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament are likely to modify the proposed rules, the Commission's initiative marks a significant turning point in the bloc's approach to artificial intelligence and, more generally, the history of artificial intelligence. It will surely result in the first set of legally binding rules specifically tailored to and addressing artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the resulting rules may apply to all companies whose algorithms are used in the European Union, thus setting the worldwide regulatory standard for artificial intelligence.
